Essential oils are complex, natural substances that work on different levels of human existence. Dr. Daniel Pénoël, a prominent figure in aromatherapy, explains how these oils act on three distinct but interconnected layers: matter, energy, and information. Understanding these layers helps us appreciate the multifaceted ways essential oils can impact our health and well-being.
Matter: The Direct Action of Essential Oils
Essential oils work directly in a couple of ways. Either through the molecules themselves or their metabolites (which are the by-products after the oil is processed by your body).
These direct actions target:
- Harmful microorganisms (like bacteria)
- Specific physiological functions
- Metabolic pathways
- Neurotransmitters
Essential oils are nature’s adaptive response to help living systems thrive in their environment. For example, plants and animals have complex cells with defined nuclei, while more primitive organisms like bacteria don't. Essential oils, with their sophisticated structure, help protect higher life forms (like us) from simpler, harmful ones (like bacteria).
Interestingly, some of the molecules in essential oils are quite similar to the ones in our bodies. For instance, Clary Sage contains sclareol, a molecule similar to estrogen, which is why it’s known for its estrogen-like effects. Other oils, like Tarragon and Anise, impact the neuromuscular junctions in our bodies, affecting how our muscles and nerves communicate.
Essential oils like Ylang Ylang, Angelica, and Sweet Marjoram can directly influence our "neuro-vegetative" system, which plays a role in how our body responds to stress and maintains balance.
Additionally, many essential oils have potent chemical actions against pathogens. Some can stop bacteria from growing (bacteriostatic), kill them outright (bactericidal), or even break them down (bacteriolytic).
In some cases, essential oils can even stimulate specific functions in the body. For example, Cineole—found in oils like Eucalyptus—encourages the secretion of mucus, making it a great choice for clearing up respiratory congestion.
The Indirect Action of Essential Oils
Back in the time of Louis Pasteur, there was a big debate about what really causes disease. One side believed in the “germ theory,” which said that all illnesses come from microorganisms invading the body. The other side believed in the “terrain theory,” which emphasised that the overall state of the body, or its "terrain," was key to health.
Today, we mostly lean toward the germ theory in modern medicine, where the focus is on treating symptoms. But we also now understand that the state of the body—our “terrain”—is crucial, especially when it comes to the immune system.
Essential oils can play a big part in supporting this terrain. Factors like emotional and mental health, diet, rest, and exercise all influence how well our immune system functions, and essential oils can help improve this balance.
Although we could get technical and explore French methods that assess the body’s pH and electrical resistivity, the key takeaway is that essential oils have been shown to have immunomodulant properties. This means they can either stimulate the immune system when it needs a boost or help reduce its hyperactivity in cases like allergies and autoimmune disorders, where the immune system mistakenly attacks the body.
What’s unique about essential oils is their ability to support overall health without the negative side effects of conventional antibiotics, which can disrupt the body's balance and lead to issues like yeast overgrowth.
As Dr. Pénoël puts it, “Essential oils are nature's answer to:
- Fighting disease
- Staying healthy
- Preventing the aging process"
In fact, research into “free radical scavengers”—molecules that combat aging and disease—points to aromatherapy as a natural and powerful solution. Essential oils not only help us fight off infections, but they also support the body’s overall terrain, keeping us strong and balanced.
Energy: The Energetic Effects of Essential Oils
When we talk about the energetic side of healing, we’re diving into a fascinating realm of “energy” or “vibrational” medicine. This includes practices like homeopathy, flower essences, and gem essences, where the focus is on how these remedies influence our energetic or vibrational levels, impacting both our physical and psychological well-being.
You might have heard of various hands-on healing techniques, like Reiki, polarity therapy, Shiatsu, and acupuncture. These methods, as well as distant healing practices like spiritual healing and radionics, all revolve around affecting our body and mind’s energetic states.
Essential oils fit right into this picture! They not only have physical benefits but also have pronounced energetic effects on our body's meridian and chakra systems, as well as on reflex points in our hands and feet. This makes natural essential oils online a fantastic addition to other energetic therapies, whether you’re using remedies like flower essences or engaging in hands-on therapies like Reiki, Shiatsu, or foot reflexology.
Massage is another great example of combining physical and energetic effects, making it an ideal setting for aromatherapy. Imagine how the calming scents of essential oils can enhance the soothing touch of a massage, creating a deeper relaxation experience.
In practices like “Touch for Health,” we specifically look at the energetic balance of the meridian system, and that’s where the magic happens! You’ll notice that essential oils can create an immediate energetic effect, often before they even penetrate the physical body. It’s incredible to see how these oils can enhance our overall wellness by working on an energetic level, proving that there’s so much more to healing than just the physical aspect!

Information: How Essential Oils Affect Us Through Olfaction
Isn't it fascinating how our sense of smell works? Even though we can distinguish between thousands of different scents, the science behind smell or olfaction remains a bit of a mystery. But we do know there are three key steps in how our bodies respond to aromas.
-
Reception Stage
It all starts when we inhale an aroma. Picture it: a molecule is floating in the air, and as we breathe it in, it binds to receptors in the upper part of our nasal cavity.
-
Transmission Stage
Once this binding happens, it sets off nerve impulses that travel straight to the olfactory bulb deep in our brains. From there, these impulses move into the limbic system—the part of the brain that’s often called the "original brain," found in lower animals. This area is crucial because it’s linked to memory and emotion. That’s why scents can evoke such strong memories and feelings; they stick with us in a way that other senses sometimes don’t.
-
Perception Stage
After that, the impulses head to the hypothalamus, which acts like a control station for the pituitary gland. When the hypothalamus signals the pituitary gland, it releases hormones into the bloodstream that help regulate other endocrine glands in the body. For example, I’ve seen this in action with Clary Sage essential oil. Some of my friends have taken a deep whiff of it and then found that their menstrual cycle started a week early! This phenomenon has even been backed by French research, showing that just a tiny amount inhaled can stimulate the nervous system, which in turn prompts the pituitary gland to kick-start the ovaries and reproductive organs.
So, the next time you catch a whiff of a familiar scent, remember there’s a lot more going on behind the scenes than just a pleasant aroma!
Conclusion
Essential oils operate on multiple levels—physical, energetic, and informational. Their direct and indirect actions on the body, combined with their influence on energy systems and the brain, make them a unique and valuable tool in both holistic health and aromatherapy. Dr. Pénoël’s framework offers a comprehensive understanding of how these natural substances promote well-being, healing, and balance in a multidimensional way.
